Biller fresher pay

Medical coding vs medical billing: medical coders read patient records and turn diagnoses and procedures into ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes. Medical billers use those codes to create insurance claims, send them, post payments and follow up unpaid or denied claims. In India, coders usually earn more — about ₹2.6–2.8 lakh as freshers, against ₹2.1–2.6 lakh for medical billers (AmbitionBox, October 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Coding turns the medical record into codes; billing turns the codes into payment.
  • Coders need anatomy and medical terms; billers need process and communication skills.
  • Both sit in the revenue cycle management (RCM) team, mostly on US healthcare claims.
  • Coders earn more than billers at every experience level, according to AmbitionBox.
  • AR callers — billers who follow up claims by phone — often work US-time night shifts.

How medical coding and medical billing work together

Both jobs are part of revenue cycle management (RCM) — the steps that turn a patient visit into payment for the doctor or hospital. Most Indian RCM companies do this work for US healthcare providers.

  1. 1

    1. Patient visit

The doctor sees the patient and records the diagnosis and treatment.

  2. 2

    2. Medical coding

The coder reads the record and assigns diagnosis and procedure codes.

  3. 3

    3. Claim creation

The biller enters the codes and charges and builds the insurance claim.

  4. 4

    4. Submission

The claim is sent to the insurer, usually electronically.

  5. 5

    5. Payment posting

When the insurer pays, the payment is recorded against the claim.

  6. 6

    6. Denials and follow-up

Unpaid or denied claims are checked, corrected and followed up — often by AR callers who phone the insurer.

A coding mistake in step 2 often shows up as a denial in step 6. That is why coders and billers work closely, and why coding accuracy is so valued.

Medical coding or medical billing: which should you choose?

Choose

Have a degree in nursing, pharmacy, life sciences, dental, AYUSH or physiotherapy
Medical coding — your medical knowledge is the core skill
Want higher pay as you gain experience
Medical coding — it pays more at every level
Enjoy talking to people and following up until a problem is solved
Medical billing or AR calling
Are comfortable with night shifts and phone work
AR calling

You do not have to choose forever. Coders and billers sit in the same RCM teams, and people who understand both sides grow faster into quality, audit and team lead roles.

How to start in medical coding

Most coders start with a 3-month course and then take the AAPC CPC exam. Employers that hire coders are listed in medical coding companies in Bangalore and India.

Learn with BCRI

BCRI’s medical coding course runs for 3 months (₹25,000). It teaches ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding, and its first module covers the billing basics — the revenue cycle, payer systems and insurance claims. Live classes Monday to Friday, online or at our Bangalore classroom, with CPC preparation and placement assistance.

FAQs

What is the difference between medical coding and medical billing?

Medical coders read patient records and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes. Medical billers use those codes to create and send insurance claims, post payments and follow up unpaid or denied claims.

Which pays more, medical coding or medical billing?

Medical coding. According to AmbitionBox (October 2026), coders earn about ₹2.6–2.8 lakh as freshers and ₹4.2–4.6 lakh with 3–6 years, against ₹2.1–2.6 lakh and ₹3.1–3.5 lakh for medical billers.

Which is easier, medical coding or medical billing?

Billing needs less medical knowledge but more process and communication skill. Coding is easier for graduates who already know anatomy and medical terms, such as nursing, pharmacy and life science graduates.

What is an AR caller?

An AR (accounts receivable) caller is a billing professional who follows up unpaid or denied insurance claims, often by phoning US insurers. Many AR roles in India work night shifts to match US hours.

Can I do both medical coding and billing?

Yes. Both jobs sit in the same revenue cycle (RCM) teams, and understanding both helps you grow into quality, audit and team lead roles.

Is there a certification for medical billing?

Yes. AAPC offers the CPB (Certified Professional Biller). For coding, the main credential is AAPC’s CPC (Certified Professional Coder).

Does BCRI teach medical billing?

BCRI’s course is a medical coding course. Its first module covers billing basics — the revenue cycle, payer systems and insurance claims — so you understand how codes turn into payment.
